ITINERARY
The Patagonia Trail - 7 days & 7 nights Horse Safari
Arrival Details
All travelers must arrive in Buenos Aires (at the latest) on the day before a mid morning domestic flight on Day 1. It may be possible to check straight through to Bariloche Airport from Bs. As. International Airport. Normally easiest to break the journey in Bs.As.
DAY ONE //
The itinerary starts with your arrival at the airport in Patagonia. From the airport, you will be privately transferred on a 2hr car journey from Bariloche airport, to the shores of Falkner Lake, where you will be taken in a private launch across to the other side (25 minutes). Horses and gauchos await you on a remote beach from where you ride past Lago Nuevo to our base camp (2 hours).
Overnight Accommodations: Log Cabin Base Camp.
DAY TWO
Daytime activities will include a morning and afternoon ride, with lunch served at camp. The river valley and the last lake are called Filo Hua Hum, (a Mapuche Indian name). It is a privately owned estancia of 15000 hectares within the Nahuel Huapi national park (altitude 947 metres).
Overnight Accommodations: Log Cabin Base Camp
DAY THREE
7 hour trail ride climbing up into locally known ‘Buque mountain & forest’. Quite a challenging pass with likely spectacular views of Volcán Osorno & Volcán Lanin & Cerro Tronador (3470 metres). In total a 20km day ride. Fly camp is situated at 1670 metres. The evening will end sleeping in big tents with camp beds, meals and drinks served around the campfire. The camp location is wonderfully atmospheric, get spot. The cooking is incredible.
Overnight Accommodations: Tented Fly Camp 1
DAY FOUR
After a hearty cooked breakfast, coffees, teas ... the horses will be brought from there grazing spots, saddled up & it is roughly a 4 hour descent ride from camp - through ancient beach forest all the way to the river valley below. Keep an eye out for the giant magellanic woodpecker families (camphilus magellanicus), the red plumage of the adult male is a specatular sight amongst the trees. A special afternoon lunch will be waiting for you (usually barbecued ribs!) & lots of delicious extras; your comfy log cabins with hot shower will be greatly appreciated no doubt.
Overnight Accommodations: Log Cabin Base Camp
DAY FIVE
Exploratory morning & afternoon rides from camp. There are lots of Red Deer (cervus elaphus). Late afternoon rides in the lovely light are rather special.
Overnight Accommodations: Log Cabin Base Camp
DAY SIX
7 hour ride to the other side of the valley to ‘Felipe’s camp’. Some spectacular views whilst riding up to 2080 metres. Including a ‘peninsula’ ridge top ride looking out at Chacabuco & our fly camp in the distance below. Overnighting in tents & camp beds, with meals and drinks around the campfire. Say good bye to your horses & change in the morning to Felipe’s horses for the journey down the mountain.
Overnight Accommodations: Tented Fly Camp 2
DAY SEVEN
A tranquil descent toward Lago Traful. 4 hours riding. Overnight will be spent in big African style canvas tents with beds. Amenities will include shared, but spacious and good bathrooms. Traditional Argentine asado barbecue lunch in traditional pioneer surroundings - lunch will be outside and later supper will be inside the lovely old quincho (a converted barn for dining). Good opportunity to swim in the lake after lunch.
Overnight Accommodations: Tented Estancia de Felipe
DAY EIGHT //
Travel in private launch to other side of the Lake Traful. Meet your transfer & luggage & travel to Bariloche for your return domestic flight to Buenos Aires &/or onward travel.
